What to SEE by the Sea

Shells, sea glass, crabs and much more to SEE!

Shell Game – Lucky shell gatherers in Daytona beaches can find rare beach glass and shells of mollusks, including little coquina clams and lettered olive shells. The best time for collecting shells is after a strong northeast storm after high tide. That’s when many species of shells and other creatures from the sea can be washed ashore. Another great time is at low tide. Look carefully in the shallows and you will see the raised burrows made by lettered olive shells. There’s no harm in digging them up to examine their pretty shiny shells. But once you’ve admired the living animal, look for a shell that’s not occupied to take home.

All Kinds of Crabs – Even nocturnal ghost crabs and little mole crabs (sometimes called sand fleas), scurry around near the waves on Daytona beaches. They amuse onlookers while hunting for food. Odd creatures called horseshoe crabs are old timers on our planet and look like big cockroaches. Their tail isn’t a weapon! It’s used to help the crab flip itself over if it is rolled onto its back. They live in shallow coastal waters and winter in mud flats.
