Paddle boarding in calm water is good exercise and a fresh way to watch a gorgeous sunset. It doesn’t seem like much effort, starting on your knees then getting to a standing position on a large surfboard. Wider, flatter boards are more stable making them useful for fishing the shallows. Some are large enough for a child to sit in front of you. Paddling is similar to canoeing with a side-to-side stroke. Choose a paddle that’s roughly 6” to 8” taller than you are and take a PFD. The U.S. Coast Guard requires it if you are paddling on navigable water. Whether you’re following an eco trail or just interested a laid back type of transportation, this sport is easy to learn and will keep you fit.
